Response to survivors of suicide through postvention & survivor support services has been based on a passive model that underutilizes the opportunity to make referrals. Implementation of a proposed proactive model of postvention will enhance access to services for survivors & may avert the long-term consequences of suicide. The ability to design, implement & study this proactive model of postvention will require the commitment & flexibility of the American Association of Suicidology. (6 refs)
