Befrienders International’s latest study determined that the elderly suicide rate in Hong Kong is 4 to 5 times above the average. Possible reasons for the increase are described including changing attitudes toward the elderly, lack of a social welfare system, & the need for a more supportive home environment. Based on the findings, recommendations are made at the policy level, at practice level, & at training level.
