The author discusses how his training in the basic tenents of folklore research has informed his work in suicidology. Relates his experiences as an intern in China, where he interviewed older Chinese people regarding their folk beliefs about suicide & observed Chinese psychiatrists. Concludes that in China, the meaning of suicide, it’s effects & folk beliefs about the afterlife are strikingly different than those of Western Cultures.
