In this study, 40 cases who had taken an overdose, were matched with current patients at the district child psychiatric service, who had not attempted suicide. The results of this study indicate that rates of mental disorders, particularly depression, are significantly higher in adolescent overdose cases, than in community controls. At follow-up, hopelessness is still very prevalent in the overdose patients, an eventual suicide predictor.
