Data from the General Register Office for Scotland provided data on all deaths by suicide between 1981 & 1993. During this time suicide rates among men aged 15-29 increased from 17.8 (per 100,000) to 29.6. Women of the same age increased from 4.4 (per 100,000) to 8.0. Suicide rates in young men and women living in deprived areas were about twice the rates of those living in affluent areas.
