This MD details relevant antecedents, and approach to suicidal behavior and guidelines for emergency treatment by physicians. The frequency of suicide attempts increase with chronologic age, with a rapid rise in ages 13-14. The suicidal child and adolescent present significant diagnostic and dispositional problems. The diagnosis and treatment of such patients by emergency room physicians are likely and essential. As precise a diagnosis as possible is critical.
