Hakan Melhus sites recent analyses of mitochondrial lineages in European populations, which show that although the Finno-Ugric languages are closely related, the Finnish population belongs to a gene pool common to most European groups, and that the Saami have had a long history distinct from other European populations. These findings provide strong evidence against the traditional Finno-Ugrian concept.
