Trends and Differentials in Adolescent and Young Adult Mortality in the United States, 1950 Through 1993

Using data from the National Vital Statistics System and the National Longitudinal Mortality Study(USA), this study examined mortality trends from 1950-1993, among adolescents according to sex, race/ethnicity, education, family income, marital status, and casue of death. Suicide was the third leading cause of death, accounting for about 13% of all youth deaths in 1989-1991. Suicide too, has been claiming relatively more lives among the youth; the death rate from suicide rose by 6% from 1979-1991
