This paper discusses research on substance abuse prevention & identifies 4 approaches used in prevention programs: information; affective education; social influences; & social/life skills. It examines research on the impact of school-based suicide prevention programs & given the findings of substance abuse programs, recommends that schools take a more generic approach that emphasizes social/life skills (problem-solving, coping skills) rather than a specific suicide prevention approach.
