This article reports rates of suicide by firearms in the five larger Australian states (1968-1989) & notes differences between age groups & rates for city & rural dwellers. Suicide rates in South Australia declined significantly following proclamation of gun control laws in contrast to increases in the other states. Conclusions: Further reduction in firearms suicide rates might be achieved by tightening gun laws & by a media campaign to reduce easy access by males to guns in rural households.
