This article reviews evidence for factors that might place lesbians at increased risk for depression as well as factors that might protect lesbians from depression. Additionally, research on suicide attempts, alcoholism, & physical & sexual abuse of lesbians is discussed. Depression among lesbians who are non-white, not middle class, & not young adults is discussed. Evidence is presented for the role of therapists & self-help groups in affecting depression rates among lesbians. (62 refs.)
