In 1994, Lester reported that nine reviewers were unable to distinguish between suicide notes from completers & attempters at a level better than chance. To explore this further, in this study 4 people, trained to make content ratings from suicide notes, were presented 20 pairs of suicide notes, one of each pair being from a completer & one from an attempter. Their identifications were correct for 53% of the pairs, which is not significantly better than chance.
