McKhann reviews the Dutch film Death on Request. It tells the story of a 62 year old patient dying from Lou Gehrig’s disease. His disease progressively gets worse until he is unable to speak and swallow. Eventually, this patient chooses euthanasia, with the support of his wife & family doctor of 15 years. McKhann feels this video presented an example of rational suicide. It is evident the patient chose this, even though he had a good level of care with his wife & a doctor who made house-calls.
