Semistructured interviews were conducted with 48 adolescents to inventory reasons for their suicide attempt, & perceptions just prior to the event. The most frequently noted reason for attempting suicide concerned ending an unbearable consciousness. Motivation most frequently involved escalation of frustration & tension. The article suggests that with suicidal adolescents, special emphasis should be given to relationships, frustration tolerance & the way they handle their problems. (16 Refs.)
