Although considerable obstacles hinder the study of police suicide, mounting evidence suggests that self-inflicted deaths in the law enforcement profession are increasing – a trend that began in the 1980s. This article reports on studies, notes research problems, & discusses identified factors. Suicides were found to be more common among older officers & related to alcoholism, physical illness, or impending retirement. Recognizing the problem exists is the first most important step.
