Three topics in the treatment of the suicidal psychiatric inpatient are addressed: the assessment of risk, the need to differentiate among various characteristics of the suicidal crisis, & institutional suicide policies and procedures. Policies & procedures should address 4 principal areas of concern: environmental precautions, patient-specific interventions, the privilege system, & a pass system. (26 refs.)
