This book review notes that the meaning & implications of women’s preponderance among suicide attempters has been virtually ignored in the theoretical & empirical literature. Jack’s book is considered a pioneer in this regard. It addresses: Why women? Why self-poisoning? Although some limitations of Jack’s analysis are identified, the reviewer considers the book’s strength to lie in its integration of historical & sociocultural sources & perspectives.
