In this letter to Dr. Berman, Morgan discusses the growing concern in Europe that the increasing rates of suicide among individuals with long-term psychiatric illnesses may be related to new styles of psychiatric services. He also discusses a new program in which some drug overdose patients were given a “green card” which allowed them to call the clinic when they felt like harming themselves. It was found that the card holders repeated less often & made far less demands on all services.
