The author of this article notes that negative attitudes often impede jail suicide prevention efforts. Typical statements that exemplify these attitudes are provided. The New York State Crisis Service Model & other examples of jurisdictions that have overcome these obstacles, implemented prevention programs, & reduced jail suicides are discussed. Steps can be taken to stop jail suicide & prevention programs should better enable law enforcement officials to know when & how to take these steps.
