This presentation describes preliminary data from a 6-month follow-up study of adolescents hospitalized on an acute care psychiatric inpatient unit. The study was designed to examine the importance of the family system in the prevention of repetitive & increasingly serious suicidal behaviour. Preliminary findings indicated that adolescents who attempted suicide posthospitalization had significantly higher depression & ideation scores & all of them were diagnosed with a mood disorder.
