Making Schools Safe for gay and Lesbian Youth: Breaking the Silence in Schools and in Families (IN: Death by Denial: Studies of Suicide in gay and Lesbian Teenagers, edited by G Remafedi)

This chapter is the first report by the Massachusetts Govenor’s Commission on Gay & Lesbian Youth – the first of its kind in the USA. Abolishing prejudice & discrimination against these youth is a Commission goal. This report addresses problems in schools. Information was gathered from public hearings in 1992 & surveys of high school students’ attitudes. Recommendations are made for schools, 3 state agencies & the legislature. Ways for helping families of these youth are identified. (31 refs.)
