The National Network of Runaway & Youth Services (NNRYS) estimates that between a quarter to a half million lesbian, gay & bisexual youth in the USA run away or are pushed out of their homes annually. That’s 20-40% of 1.3 million who become homeless. The NNRYS calls it an epidemic that’s out of control. This article provides anecdotes by lesbian & gay homeless youth, describes 2 programs in Los Angeles that offer residential services for these youth, & explores why so few such agencies exist.
