Randomized controlled trials were selected from a literature search (back to 1964), as presenting the best evidence on program effectiveness. Of 4 such studies found, 2 showed benefit, 2 did not. All 4 suffered significant methodological flaws. Authors conclusion: at this time it is unclear as to whether or not bereavement programs help families; further studies should determine which families are likely to benefit from bereavement programs & what type of program is effective.
