This Letter to the Editor notes that much needs to be done to define new styles of clinical practice as its emphasis moves increasingly towards the community, & to establish close links between general practitioners & community mental health teams, particularly regarding acute suicide risk. Studies show education, not shifting of resources seems most important. A significant step in the right direction would be for psychiatric experience to become required training for all general practitioners.
