Between 1976-84, there were 6090 suicides & 391 attempted suicides on railways in the Federal Republic of Germany. This method of suicide was relatively higher in younger age groups. There was a peak for males in the autumn, & a markedly higher incidence of railway suicide by males on Mondays & Tuesdays. Most incidents occurred in the evening hours. Those who attempted suicide in the countryside were more seriously injured than those whose attempt took place in or near main stations. (41 refs.)
