The authors review the symptomatology, causes, incidence & treatment of depression in the elderly. The risk of suicide is twice as great among the elderly as in the general population. Suicide occurs most often early in the depression. Older persons are less likely to express their intent & are more likely to express profound hopelessness or the desire to be reunited with lost loved ones. (25 refs.)
