This paper is a lecture given by Danuta Wasserman, upon receiving the Stengel Research Award. The lecture deals primarily with change in the International Association for Suicide Prevention and Crisis Intervention’s (IASP) mission statement. This change, which the author is concerned about, is a move to replace the word prevention with preventability. The author discusses the meanings of both words and the impact such a change will have.
