139 girls, aged 13-16, admitted to an inpatient psychiatric hospital were divided into 4 groups based on their suicidal status & ego development. Results support 2 developmental types of female suicide attempters that differed significantly on symptomatology, diagnoses, & defensive style. Depression was found to a risk factor for suicide at all developmental levels. Social-cognitive development was found to have an important impact on the expression of suicidal behaviour in adolescent girls.
