This article focuses on hospital treatment & appropriate care. In terms of the length of hospital stays, it notes patients should not be hospitalized if a less restrictive alternative is available. Existing parameters & criteria to determine who warrants hospitalization are noted. It examines reviews that can save money but notes that cost containment at the expense of appropriate care violates the ethical/social contract inherent in the delivery of medical services. (20 Refs.)
