The authors comment on a previous article by Lester (1992) on miscounting suicides. They point out that any research that does not consider the way suicides are classified in different countries can only get findings about the relationships between official rates but not about the relationships between the true rates. As an example they cite data from the Province of Valencia which, when reclassified, resulted in a suicide rate more than 3 times higher than the official rate. (13 refs.)
