In this letter to the editor, Hochbaum criticizes an editorial by Susan Sorenson (see SIEC #911275). He states that Sorenson’s editorial on elderly suicide seems to be based on a moral rejection of the act rather than professional objectivity. He questions: 1) her argument that the idea of suicide as a choice is a recent introduction; & 2) her belief that elderly suicide is mainly due to passing episodes of clinical depression or extreme stress. He says that suicide is an individual choice.
