Three studies were undertaken including comparisons of rates: 1) by year, 1960-1988 for both sexes; 2) by chronological age/developmental age; & 3) before & after midlife. Results clearly show differences between Canada & the USA, with Canada having a higher rate than the USA. One specific finding was that young adult males are a current high-risk group, especially in Canada. Possible explanations for the differences are presented. Implications for prevention & service are provided. (36 refs.)
