This article summarizes a report on the effect of a transfer from traditional hospitals to community care in a British town for in-patients at risk for suicide. The author found many problems with the system, for example: stigmatization & polarization of attitudes in the community, conflicting ideologies between psychiatrists & other professionals, fragmentation of service, difficulties in monitoring & evaluating patients, & compromise in caring for the severely ill.
