The author presented a theoretical viewpoint for understanding suicide as an attempt by a person to defend a threatened conviction about himself/herself & other people. This theory is centered in the concept of the Adapted Child Ego State developed by Berne. The purpose of this presentation was to call attention to this theoretical framework as it clarifies suicidal behaviour, & to invite discussion & research to test this formulation.
