Personality characteristics & life-style behaviours & attitudes of a group of hyperobese patients applying for bypass operations were compared to control groups applying for hernia & appendix operations & with persons hospitalized because of a recent suicide attempt. Statistical analysis did not yield any differences between the hyperobese group & the medical group. However, the hyperobese were significantly different from the suicide attempters in having fewer feelings of loss & powerlessness.
