The author briefly presents the objectives & results of his research with 202 suicidal children, adolescents, their families & caregivers at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Using DSM-III criteria, the 3 most common diagnoses associated with suicide attempts were found to be adjustment disorders, conduct disorder & major depressive episode. It was also found that in almost every attempt, families & professionals showed strong emotional reactions which may have hindered treatment.
