This article describes 2 Czechoslovakian art memorials created by John Hejduk for Jan Palach, a 21-year-old Prague philosophy student who committed suicide in 1969 to protest the Soviet invasion & occupation of Czechslovakia. Palach demanded that censorship & a Soviet-sponsored newspaper be eliminated, & another person was to commit suicide 5 days later if the Soviets did not comply. The poem which inspired the structures, “The Funeral of Jan Palach” is also presented. (VM)
