The authors examined the relative lethality of the range of tricyclic antidepressants available in Australia. However they found that it was difficult to establish a lethality index because of the lack of statistical information regarding prescription practices. In the interim, the authors suggest that some simple measures, such as a clear warning of the risk of patient suicide, be implemented to increase doctors’ awareness of the potential lethality of tricyclic antidepressants.
