A 1990 federal survey found that 27% of high school students (N=11,631) had thought seriously about killing themselves in the preceding year. 9th through 12th grade students in every state, Washington DC, Puerto Rico & the Virgin Islands were surveyed. 1 in 12 said they had actually attempted suicide & 2% said their attempts were serious enough to require medical attention. The CDC survey found that thoughts of suicide & suicide attempts are significantly more likely for females than males.
