In their disagreement about participation in assisted suicide & active euthanasia, physicians simply reflect the diversity of attitudes toward these practices. But as those most familiar with alternatives to induced death, especially palliative care, they have a responsibility to ensure that assisted suicide & euthanasia are not uncritically embraced as appropriate ways of dealing with suffering. 3 contributions made by physicians to this debate are reviewed by the author.
