The purpose of the chapter is to convey an understanding of the major kinds of crises, including suicide threats & attempts, in terms that can prepare the college psychotherapist to prevent or minimize destructive outcomes & to maximize the opportunities inherent in crises. Resources for handling crises, characteristics of students who present urgent concerns, the psychotherapist’s own particular contributions & the importance of addressing the underlying issues (e.g. self-esteem) are discussed.
