A brief article about the suicide of an elderly Victoria couple. Both the husband & wife were suffering from medical problems. Anne LaBonte, a geriatric psychiatrist, says that elderly suicide is often unreported because of the attached stigma while Gerald Hodge, a gerontology professor, argues that elderly suicide may mean that society places too much emphasis on preserving independence – even when independence may be detrimental to individual well-being.
