This article discusses the possibility that suicide attempts by overdosing is a symbolic form of communication. The author asserts that understanding the meaning of the comminication requires consideration of the culture in which overdosing occurs, & relevant cultural changes are discussed. The author discusses the properties of a communication system, as well as how the overdose may mean different things to different family members. (VM)
