The suicide rate in prisons has increased substantially since the 1970s in England & Wales. The author notes that only minimum preventive measures have been taken for this high risk group; however, the new chief inspector is improving the situation. Formerly, the primary concern was identifying those at risk for suicide & stopping them. Now, the terrible conditions & the treatment of the inmates are being viewed as significant contributors to suicidal behavior. (VM)
