Addresses some potential difficulties in communication which may occur between health-care professionals & those who are being assessed following a suicide attempt. Attitudes towards suicide & attempted suicide which may be held by the patients & caregivers are reviewed & the effects that these may have on communication, particularly at the assessment stage, are considered. Some techniques to enhance communication & assessment are proposed. (30 refs.)
