The literature on the relationship between physical illness & suicide is reviewed. The Madurai studies reveal that high scores on hopelessness & suicide intent in patients with pain from duodenal ulcer, dysmenorrhea & other uterine problems are associated with suicidal behavior. The need for assessing suicide risk in such patients under nonpsychiatric medical care is discussed. A simple, easy-to-administer questionnaire is presented. (30 refs.)
