Reviews what has been written about the possible causes of adolescent suicide & of its increase & proposes how educators & therapists may use poetry writing as well as the visual arts to reach potential victims. Poetry is seen as offering adolescents a means of self-expression, as helping therapy clients to understand themselves & as permitting access to self-exploration & feelings. Poetry helps teach empathy, reduces feelings of alienation & aids in both intra- & interpersonal communication.
