Two reasons are given for why little is done about the high elderly suicide rate: suicide is a complex behavior difficult to control and a low priority is placed on saving retired people’s lives. Many more older men than women kill themselves because men are more likely to kill themselves due to employment problems (which often occur late in life) and less willing to seek psychiatric help. Suicides as the result of loss, “will to live”, “retirement shock”, & preparing to retire are discussed.
