This article discusses the extent to which minors should be allowed to establish independent relationships with health care professionals, without parental consultation or consent. Many adolescents will not seek help if they must inform their parents. This is a particularly important problem with minors who are suicidal. Manitoba law states that mental health professionals must warn the appropriate authority figure if a child or adolescent is suicidal. (VM)
