Reviews research regarding the use of drugs in continuation & preventative therapy. Preventative treatment is desirable for patients manifesting clinical features associated with a high risk for recurrence, such as older age of initial onset; family history of relapsing illness; previous suicide attempts; the presence of psychotic features and/or serious functional impairment. A model for the drug management of unipolar depression is discussed.
